WHOIS Lookup: Registrar, Status & Expiry

Shows Whois / RDAP data of a domain: registrar, status, creation and expiry date, name servers. Useful for ownership questions and before buying a domain.

What does the WHOIS lookup check?

The lookup retrieves your domain's administrative data — via modern RDAP or classic WHOIS. It shows the registrar (who the domain is registered through), the domain status (EPP codes such as clientTransferProhibited), the creation, update and expiry dates, and the configured name servers. It's the ownership-and-history view of your domain.

Why it matters

The expiry date is the most critical value: if a domain lapses unnoticed, someone else can pick it up — including your email addresses. The status codes show whether your domain is locked against unauthorised transfers or deletion. And before buying a domain, it's worth checking the registrar, age and history to avoid nasty surprises.

How to read the result

Keep an eye on the expiry date and ideally enable auto-renew. A status like clientTransferProhibited is a good sign — it blocks unauthorised moves. For most domains, WHOIS and RDAP no longer show personal registrant data since the GDPR (it's redacted); technical fields like registrar, dates and name servers stay visible.

Frequently asked questions about Whois / RDAP

What's the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

RDAP is the modern, structured successor to the old WHOIS protocol, returning machine-readable, standardised data.

Why can't I see the owner's details?

Since the GDPR, personal WHOIS data is generally redacted; only technical and administrative fields remain public.

What does clientTransferProhibited mean?

A protective status set by your registrar that prevents the domain from being moved to another provider without your approval.

Can I tell when a domain becomes available?

The expiry date gives a hint, but it's no guarantee — expiry is usually followed by several weeks of grace and redemption periods.
